It is a decade on since Everything Everything’s debut album, Man Alive. An impressive lifespan from the awash of indie bands that appeared in the late noughties. And they have become so much more, with interesting polyrhythms and synthetic textures that weave through their sound. They now return with ‘Planets’ the third single to be released from the band’s upcoming fifth album RE-ANIMATOR.

Whilst the lyrics seem a little cryptic on ‘Planets’, they are meant to be a, “calling out to be loved, feeling unworthy and finding the love of the universe instead”. The sound world puts you in a lilting swing of bulging synths, which reflects the lyrical content. The musical texture becomes pretty complicated when analysed, but is smooth and shifting on the surface.

It is the pacing of ‘Planets’ that stands out. The track is completely unpredictable and forever shifting into new textures and reprisals of the ever-burgeoning “planets”. It has everything (really, everything) you would expect as hallmarks from the Manchester band. Jonathan Higgs’ falsetto vocals lead the way, but still manage to take you in a new direction from the last ten years.

‘Planets’ is incredibly addictive in a way that is impossible to pinpoint. Everything Everything remind everyone where they belong – at the top, flexing their musical prowess.

RE-ANIMATOR is scheduled for release on the 21 August and is available for pre-order now.
