The Smashing Pumpkins have returned with two new eighties-influenced tracks, ‘Cyr’ and ‘The Colour of Love’.

The two tracks are set to feature on their upcoming eleventh album which will follow from 2018’s, Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.

The recording for the album took place from their hometown of Chicago and is scheduled for release later this year by Sumerian Records.

Both tracks introduce eighties electropop and gothic influences and give a solid glimpse of the new album’s musical direction. This is not the first time the Pumpkins have experimented with synths, the band had revealed a similar dark side on 1998’s Adore, as well as in their contribution to the Batman & Robin sound track the year before.

‘Cyr’ is reminiscent of Kraftwerk at their peak. The Pumpkins focus more on the synths rather than the guitar riffs they are more commonly known for. Frontman Billy Corgan refers to it as “dystopic folly”, adding that it is “One soul against the world sort of stuff, set against a backdrop of shifting loyalties and sped up time”.

A look at the lyrics confirms that statement: “Shattered I resign. We’re on the verge, we’re on the verge, of sacred dawning and sloe-sloe eyes,” Corgan sings at the beginning and continues in the chorus, “stare down your masters, with the promise of one and what you are.”

The video for the single is directed by artist Linda Strawberry. With its futuristic style and clever visual effects, it does the track justice. Strawberry called the video, “a goth fever dream of pent up emotion”, as well as “a dark seduction filmed in quarantine at a social distance”.

‘The Colour of Love’ is an electro-goth hymn with heavy basslines and a rock n’ roll attitude that the fans of The Sisters of Mercy and Billy Idol will love. The lyrics also follow this dark theme: “And the colour of your love is grey. A vast amount of the time slipped away,” sings Corgan in the chorus.

Billy Corgan confirmed the band have 21 songs already for the new album. The Pumpkins had to cancel their performances this year but a tour will eventually follow the album’s release.
