You’ve returned to work, its bloody freezing outside and all the Christmas chocolates have come to an end. There is not a lot to be celebrating at this time of year. Perhaps you’ve been managed to grab a vegan sausage roll or some other bout of luck has befallen you. But if not, chances are, the year so far is bleak and cold. But fear not. Crappy Christmas tunes are out and exciting new music is in. So relax and put your headphones in. We’ve selected some of the best tunes January has to offer so far. I present to you our first Best of 3 for 2019.

SOAK – ‘Knock Me Off My Feet’

Bridie Monds-Watson better know as SOAK, (the stage name, a portmanteau of Soul and Folk) returns with her second single from the upcoming album, Grim Town. The album due in late April will follow her mercury-nominated debut, Before We Forgot How to Dream from 2015.  ‘Knock Me Off My Feet’ details small town culture and being both the best and worst of yourself in certain situations. It follows from previous release, ‘Everybody Loves You’. Both singles retain the same dream-like production and slick, soulful vocals that lead to her Mercury nomination and Choice Music Prize. Grim Town is set to heavily discuss the freedoms  and tribulations of living and growing up in a small town environment, which Derry born Bridie knows all to well. Expect to feel all the feels with this one.

The Chemical Brothers – ‘MAH’

MAH or ‘Mad As Hell’ is the next single to be released from the duo’s upcoming ninth album, No Geography, due this Spring. It continues their return to the distinctive heavy-synth sound and follows nicely from their last release ‘Free Yourself‘. Its accompanying music video depicts a taste of their renowned live shows with snippets of their sold-out Alexandra Palace shows dispersed between creepy faces and other visuals. The Chemical Brothers are not returning quietly with No Geography. It seems the pair are concocting an explosive album to surpass the Grammy-nominated Born in the Echoes from 2015.

whenyoung – ‘Never Let Go’

This Irish trio have been on the radar for just over a year now but it looks as though 2019 could well be theirs. The band which consists of vocalist and bassist, Aoife Power, guitarist, Niall Burns and drummer, Andrew Flood had quite a blast in their musical career so far. Since releasing music in 2017 the band have shared the tremendous Given Up EP, played at The Pogues’, Shane MacGowan’s 60th birthday party and kickstarted 2019 with this corker of a track, ‘Never Let Go’. They might be nothing new as such but whenyoung are full of jangly guitar riffs and massive pop choruses to get you hooked. The band hit the road next month playing cities across the UK. Catch them now because whenyoung are jet-setting to great things in 2019. Wait and see.
