When your band is fronted by a pair who go by the names of Janet Planet and Sugar Bones, you’re unlikely to go unnoticed. Then when you throw into the mix a sound that’s a blend of The Ting Tings best bits, 90s dance beat-makers Deee-Lite and LCD Soundsystem’s driving synths, it’s time to take Confidence Man’s bonkers music way more seriously.

The Australian four-piece will tell you straight up that most of their songs are about boys; not like the cringeworthy hopeless romantic type of Taylor Swift or Carly Rae Jepsen, but pumped full of sass. ‘Bubblegum’ was the first track to prick our ears up; “I wish I had someone to string along, I wish I had someone to rub my body on” Janet Planet sings before spiralling into a sickly sweet chorus about candy. Then came the jangly ‘Boyfriend’, sounding like The Ting Tings track you’d happily show your mates without turning a reddish hue. Finally, ‘Better Sit Down Boy’ summarised their despair with men (“You better shape up boy, better earn your keep”) over their most shakable tune yet with similarities to 90s banger ‘Groove Is In The Heart’ by Deee-Lite.

Like Bad Sounds, the Aussie band are best served live at one of their gigs. Dance routines, prancing about in underwear and two lads in veils (Clarence and Reggie) on drums and synths can all be found. Australian radio station triple j has already labelled them as “the best up-and-coming live band in Australia” and last year they played a string of London shows as well as Glastonbury. Confidence Man were the life and soul of the party in 2017 and we’re confident that 2018 won’t leave them feeling hungover.
