Bon Jovi have shared their new single ‘American Reckoning’, which refects on George Floyd’s death.
The American rock band have made their comeback with new album Bon Jovi: 2020 scheduled for release on 02 October. Although the album was completed before they wrote the track, it will now be included in the album’s track list. The band have already released two singles from the album, ‘Unbroken’ (November 2019) and ‘Limitless’ (February 2020).
“I was moved to write ‘American Reckoning’ as a witness to history” Jon Bon Jovi said, stressing that “the greatest gift of an artist is the ability to use their voice to speak to issues that move us.”
The lyrics of ‘American Reckoning’ does not only refer to the killing of George Floyd, but to the resulting situation in America: “America is on fire, there’s protests in the street, her conscience has been looted, and her soul is under siege,” sings Jon Bon Jovi.
The net proceeds from the single’s download will support Bryan Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative.
Bon Jovi had officially announced the Bon Jovi: 2020 Tour last January, with Bryan Adams as their main opening act. On April however, it was announced the tour would be cancelled due to the COVID-19.
